Jockey's Ridge State Park is just south of the Wright Brothers' Memorial
and is an almost mystical area of sand dunes unencumbered by trees,
vegetation, or most importantly, homes. Unfortunately, the main ridge
continues to dwindle in size. What used to be well over 100 feet tall
has now decreased to nearly 90 feet. The trend appears to be continuing
and it is quite possible that Jockey's Ridge will be little more than a
hill in a decade or so. You should experience it while you still can.
It provides amazing views of the ocean and sound and is about as
peaceful a place as you can find on the Outer Banks (aside from
Conscience Point).
