The Outer Banks is filled with historic lighthouses, expansive beaches and unique shops and restaurants.  Rodanthe itself is an historic area.  Originally named Chicamacomico, Rodanthe was a major battleground during the Civil War in the Union's attempt to prevent the confederates from destroying all of the lighthouses along the coast.

Rodanthe is also home to the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station - one of the oldest Life Saving Stations in the United States.  Literally thousands of lives have The Chicamacomico Life Saving Stationbeen saved over the last 200 years by brave souls who risked their lives to save others.

It is home to one of the greatest rescues in early Coast Guard history, the 1918 rescue of forty-two crew members of the British tanker, Mirlo. The six U.S. Life Savers involved in that rescue were awarded the Silver Cup from the British Trade Commission and the Gold Life Saving Medal from the U.S. Treasury Department. King George of England was so appreciative of the heroes of Chicamacomico and their valiant efforts that he fashioned a gold medal in their honor and awarded it to these same men.  The Life Saving Station is about a ten minute walk from Conscience Point.

Cape Hatteras LighthouseAbout thirty minutes south of Conscience Point is the granddaddy of all lighthouses, Cape Hatteras.  Available for climbing year-round, Cape Hatteras remains a majestic beacon rising over the maritime forest of Buxton.

Thirty minutes north of Conscience Point is Bodie Island Lighthouse.  While not available for climbing (yet), Bodie Island and its museum are a great get away.

Far north of Conscience Point is the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.  This is an excellent spot to take your familiy for a picnic or a nice stroll.  The Whalehead Club, which has been around for nearly a century, has been refurbished and looks as magnificent as it did when folks came to the Outer Banks to hunt.
