A DAILY LOOK AT THE CONSTRUCTION OF

With blue skies above and a cool breeze at their backs, the good folks from Carolina Sport Court broke ground today on Conscience Court.  By day's end, the ground had been leveled and graded, the concrete on the pool had been cut back by three feet and a retention wall had been put up next to the pool.  Word from Jim Barbee, President Extraordinaire of Carolina Sport Court, is that the court is already shaping up to be as fantastic as we had hoped.  The retention wall has given the court the appearance of being "submerged."  Jim is hoping to be able to have the concrete poured tomorrow afternoon.

Blue skies gave way to heavy rains in the afternoon.  There were hopes that the concrete would be poured in the afternoon, but that proved to be impossible.  The crew was able to get the fence up along the pool deck.  This will be both aesthically pleasing and a necessary safety measure.  Moms and dads won't have to worry about their kids falling down from the pool deck onto the court.  At the same time, parents will be able to watch their kids playing on the court from their perch above the court.  It's going to be a great court.

The blue skies returned and the crew busted a move today.  By 8:00 A.M., we already had a message from Jim Barbee telling us that the crew was hard at work and that the concrete was going in.  By 4:00 P.M., the concrete had been poured and smoothed and needed the night to cure.  According to Jim, "The hard part's over.  It's smooth sailing from here."  Jim was genuinely excited about how the court is turning out.  It fits perfectly between the pool and the fence and, as promised, there is a little nook where the tot goal will go tomorrow.  Jim also explained that he thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to actually pour and spread the concrete, something he hadn't done in 35 years.  The remote location of Conscience Point made it too difficult to coordinate subcontractors to lay the concrete.  So, the boys rented the trucks and put down the concrete themselves.  Tomorrow, the court will begin taking the form that will resemble the finished product.  The hoops will be put in place, the ball containment fencing will be installed and the game court tiles will be put down.  The logo is in the process of being put on the tiles this week in Louisiana and will be done in six days or so.  For a couple of weeks, the court will have to exist without the Conscience Court logo, but will still be an amazing amenity sure to be the envy of the Outer Banks.

Today was an important date in Conscience Point history.  Major construction of Conscience Court was completed.  The two basketball goals were put up, the court tiles were put down and the ball containment system was erected.  The lines of the court were painted to some degree, but the three point lines will have to wait until the logo arrives in a few weeks.  The tot goal was set at 4' high and is guaranteed to be a major hit with the little ones.  According to Jim Barbee, the court looks exceptional.  His exact words were that Conscience Point was now "like a resort."  We are indebted to Jim and the entire crew from Carolina Sport Court for their tireless efforts and look forward to getting the pictures this weekend.  Final touches go on the court tomorrow.

We got our first glimpse of Conscience Court today (the photos above were delayed in arriving because of a computer glitch).  Words cannot express the excitement that coursed through our veins as those first images appeared on our computer screen.  We want to take this opportunity to thank Jim Barbee and the good folks at Carolina Sport Court for all of their hard work.  We had a vision in our heads of how the court would end up and somehow Jim and the boys surpassed our expectations.  This entire process was an example of how business should work.  We contacted Jim in the middle of 2007 and within one phone call, we felt comfortable enough to put all of our dreams into the hands of a man we didn't even know.  We quickly realized that we were in the hands of an absolute professional and had made a wise decision.  Jim worked with us tirelessly and never once lost his cool, even when it seemed that the court was doomed to failure.  We've never met a more even keeled man and Jim made this very exasperating process a whole lot less stressful.  If you ever get the opportunity to work with Jim, do it.  You won't be sorry.

In a few weeks, the final touches will be put on the court...the logo, decorative rock and the three point lines.  We'll post the photos as soon as they arrive.  Keep checking back.

Today saw the virtual completion of the court.  Jim and his trusted partner, Kevin, drove back out to Rodanthe and installed the logo.  As expected, the court looks amazing according to Jim.  We collectively decided not to install three point lines because it would make the court look too "busy."  In addition to the logo being installed, sand was placed around the perimeter of the court in preparation for the decorative rock that will border the court and the piece of pole that was sticking up above the tot goal was shaved off.

Today was a red letter date in the history of Conscience Point.  All of the loose ends were tied up and Conscience Court, with logo installed, officially began its life at Conscience Point.
